Follow these tips to support calcium absorption
Combine calcium with vitamin D: vitamin D contributes to the absorption of calcium. Try to get moderate sun exposure (around 10-15 minutes a day) or include foods rich in vitamin D, such as oily fish and egg yolk, or consider taking supplements if necessary.
Avoid too much caffeine and salt: a high intake of caffeine and sodium can reduce calcium absorption and increase its excretion in urine. Try to limit coffee, soft drinks and very salty foods to maximise calcium retention.
Chew well to protect your calcium: chewing food properly helps to alkalise it, which makes it easier to absorb calcium and other minerals essential for your bones. Take your time to chew each mouthful until it is well broken down; this simple habit can make a big difference to how your body retains and uses calcium. Look after your bones!
